Lighting Design - Why does it matter?

Why is lighting design an important aspect of office interior design?

We are born of light. The seasons are felt through light. We only know the world as it is evoked by light”, famously quoted by architect Louis Kahn describes the importance with which one must view lighting in the design of a space. This is even more significant for office lighting as people tend to spend about seven to ten hours, five days a week. This rounds to about 40 hours a week or more easily stated as close to one third of a person’s lifetime. In the workplace of today, where the majority of information is processed visually lighting plays a vital role in the design of an office space. Gone are the days of incandescent bulbs, having been phased out due to energy inefficiency. Even the commercial workhorse of the recent past, fluorescent bulbs are becoming harder to find as they too are being phased out due to inefficiencies. New and improved technologies such as LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) are replacing these old generation of lights with higher efficiencies, increased controllability and improved reliance. An impactful visual is created with the correct lighting design. Lighting will almost unilaterally determine the way we view a space and as such can drastically influence the impression it leaves on clients or visitors to your office, consequently uplifting the organization’s brand image. A second, more important reason for good lighting is user wellbeing. There is significant scientific reason at present pointing to the various effects lighting within a space can have on users of the space. From brightness, glare, color temperature, etc., the various factors of lighting can have detrimental effects on employees’ physical health, mental health and overall wellbeing. This in turn affects their performance and productivity. Improved lighting technologies as mentioned previously, claim higher efficiencies. This means in addition to bad lighting design causing poor employee performance and productivity, employers will also have to face higher energy bills and maintenance costs from old lighting technology as opposed to newer technologies. As opposed to lighting within a residence, commercial lighting within an office is left on for the most part of a day, and this can lead to significant costs over time. The increased usage will also lead to higher maintenance costs. For these mentioned reasons, lighting plays a very important role in the interior design process of an office.
